Overview
The KEMET Organic Capacitor (KO-CAP) is a tantalum
capacitor with a Ta anode and Ta
2
O
5
dielectric. A conductive
organicpolymerreplacesthetraditionallyusedMnO
2
as the
cathodeplateofthecapacitor.ThisresultsinverylowESRand
improvedcapacitanceretentionathighfrequency.TheKO-
CAP also exhibits a benign failure mode which eliminates the
ignition failures that can occur in standard MnO
2
tantalumtypes.
KO-CAPsmayalsobeoperatedatvoltagesupto90%ofrated
voltageforparttypeswithratedvoltagesof≤10voltsandup
to80%ofratedvoltageforparttypes>10voltswithequivalent
orbetterreliabilitythantraditionalMnO
2
tantalum capacitors
operated at 50% of rated voltage.
TheT521SeriesHighVoltagePolymerTantalumisdesigned
for higher application voltages such as 12 V, 24 V, 28 V, and 48
V input rails. This series demonstrates excellent high voltage
handlingcapabilitiesandreliabilityandiscommonlyselected
as a replacement for other high capacitance dielectrics such as
MnO
2
tantalumandaluminumelectrolyticcapacitors.TheT521
Seriescanbesafelyoperatedat80%oftheratedvoltagesand
can withstand transient conditions up to the rated voltage of the
component. This series offers higher capacitance for a given
applicationvoltagewhencomparedtomultilayerceramicand
tantalum MnO
2
devices. The T521 Series also offers superior
ESR performance over tantalum MnO
2
andaluminumelectrolytic
capacitorsandamuchlowerprolethanaluminumpolymerand
aluminumelectrolyticcapacitors.
